Three months is a realistic timeline to meaningfully improve your IELTS band score, provided your study time is structured rather than random. Here's the study plan we recommend to students starting from an intermediate level.
Month 1: Build the foundation
Focus on understanding the exam format inside and out — all four modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), timing for each section, and the band descriptors examiners actually score against. Take one full diagnostic practice test to establish your starting point, and spend the rest of the month on core vocabulary and grammar accuracy.
Month 2: Targeted skill-building
- Writing: Learn the structure for Task 1 (data description) and Task 2 (essay), and write at least two practice essays per week with feedback.
- Speaking: Practice all three parts of the speaking test with a partner or coach, recording yourself to review pacing and fluency.
- Reading & Listening: Do timed practice sections twice a week, reviewing every wrong answer to understand why you missed it.
Month 3: Full practice tests and refinement
Shift to full-length, timed mock tests under real exam conditions — ideally one complete test per week. Review each one in detail: which question types cost you the most marks, and which section needs the most remaining practice. In the final two weeks, focus on your weakest module rather than spreading practice evenly.
A few things that make the biggest difference
- Practicing under real time pressure, not untimed
- Getting your writing and speaking reviewed by someone who knows the band descriptors
- Reviewing mistakes in detail, not just checking the answer key
Weekly mock tests, one-on-one speaking practice, and expert writing feedback.
